V IBERIAN MODELLING WEEK

LISBON-CAPARICA, PORTUGAL

21st to 24th November 2018

From 21st to 24th November 2018, the V Iberian Modelling Week (IMW) will take place at the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa in Caparica campus.

This edition is organized by the Portuguese Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation (PT-MATHS-IN). The V IMW brings together math MSc students with academic supervisors to work in teams on previously defined industrial projects.

The main objectives are:

  1. Give the students the experience of working in mathematical modelling of industrial problems, under the supervision of a specialized teacher.

  2. Provide them the opportunity to approach identical problems that they might find on the marketplace, as well as to develop their teamwork skills, critical thinking, rigorous and scientific communication.

  3. To raise awareness of the companies to the contribution that mathematicians can give to the industry, emphasizing that the mathematical knowledge and methodologies can provide the industry with a competitive advantage.

The Iberian Modeling Week is an initiative of the Spanish Mathematics Network - MATH-IN, and the Portuguese Network for Mathematics in Industry and Innovation - PT-MATHS-IN. It is held annually alternatively in Portugal and Spain. After editions that were held in Coimbra, Santiago de Compostela, Porto and Vigo, Lisbon is chosen as the venue for this fifth edition.
