Dr. João Lobo Antunes graduated in Medicine from the University of Lisbon in 1968, obtaining his PhD there as well in 1983. Between 1971 and 1984 he worked at the New York Neurological Institute’s Neurosurgery Department, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, being named Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at that university. He returned to Portugal in 1984 as Professor of Neurosurgery of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon.
Throughout the years he took several roles, of which the following stand out: President of the Pedagogical Council of the F.M.L (1988-1989), President of the Portuguese Society of Neurosurgery, President of the European Society of Neurosurgery (1999-2003), and was the President of several Ethic Committees of various institutions. Nowadays he is also a State Adviser by nomination of the President of the Republic.
He is part of various Professional Scientific Societies, such as the American College of Surgeons and the World Academy of Neurological Surgery, as well as of several prestigious publications’ Editorial Boards, like the Clinical Neurosurgery and the British Journal of Neurosurgery.
He also received innumerous awards and decorations as the Pfizer Award (1969), the Pessoa Award (1996) and the Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique (2004). He also has a well-spoken literary work and has published 178 articles.

O Dr. João Lobo Antunes licenciou-se em Medicina na Universidade de Lisboa em 1968, tendo obtido o seu Doutoramento na mesma em 1983. Entre 1971 e 1984 trabalhou no Departamento de Neurocirurgia do New York Neurological Institute, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, tendo sido nomeado Professor Associado de Neurocirurgia desta Universidade. Regressou a Portugal em 1984 como Professor Catedrático de Neurocirurgia da Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa.
Ao longo dos anos desempenhou vários cargos, dos quais se destacam: Presidente do Conselho Pedagógico da F.M.L (1988-1989), Presidente da Sociedade Portuguesa de Neurocirurgia, Presidente da Sociedade Europeia de Neurocirurgia (1999-2003), assim como Presidente de diversas Comissões de Ética de várias instituições. Actualmente desempenha também o cargo de Conselheiro de Estado por nomeação do Presidente da República.
Pertence a várias Sociedades Científicas Profissionais, tais como a American College of Surgeons e a World Academy of Neurological Surgery, assim como a Conselhos Editoriais de várias publicações de prestígio como a Clinical Neurosurgery e o British Journal of Neurosurgery.
Recebeu ainda inúmeros prémios e condecorações como o Prémio Pfizer (1969), Prémio Pessoa (1996) e a Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique (2004), tendo ainda uma conceituada obra escrita e 178 artigos publicados.
