Raquel Aires-Barros graduated in Chemical Engineering, obtained the degree of Master of Biotechnology (Biochemical Engineering) and a Ph.D. (1990) in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). Research Assistant in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (1986-1987). Joined the IST in 1987 as a Researcher Assistant. From 1985 to 2011 was Associate Professor, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (DEQB). In 2001 was unanimously approved on evidence Aggregation. Since 2011 is a Full Professor in the Department of Bioengineering (DBE) of IST, Universidade de Lisboa. Since 2012 is also President of the Pedagogical Council at IST, UL. Currently is also a researcher at the Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences (IBB). Current research interests include the development of new separation processes with high performance and efficiency for purification biopharmaceuticals, with special emphasis on the purification of antibodies using aqueous two-phase systems and the development of devices- "Lab-on-a-Chip" - for protein purification and separation of cells.
She is chair of the Session of Downstream Processing (DSP) of the European Society of Biochemical Engineering Sciences (ESBES); Vice-President of the Portuguese Society for Biotechnology and editor of Separation and Purification Technology Journal.
