Graduated in Pharmacy by Faculdade de Farmácia e Bioquímica do Espirito Santo (1976), Master in Chemistry by the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (1979) and PhD in Chemistry by the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (1983). Post doctorate in determination of structure, dynamics and function of virus proteins by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), at the University of Pennsylvania, 1983 to 1985 and 1991 to 1992, whose results led him to be a co-author of an article that was on the cover of Science magazine on May 31, 1991. He is a researcher - Embrapa Instrumentação since 1986 and also a Professor of the Postgraduate Program in Chemistry of the Institute of Chemistry of São Carlos (IQSC) of USP (CAPES 7). In 2019 he was awarded by CAPES, as supervisor of the best thesis in chemistry. He has experience in biophysics and biochemistry, with emphasis on NMR and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic techniques, working mainly on the following topics: analysis of viruses, bacteria, tumor cells, plant and animal tissues, food, monitoring of electrochemical reactions in situ, biofuels among other materials. Also works in the development of edible films for food coating, nanoparticles systems for catalysis, and controlled release of drugs and nutrients.
