Michael Maiwald is a physico-chemist who in 1994 graduated from Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, where he also received his doctorate (1997). Subsequently, he headed a working group for online NMR spectroscopy at the Institute of Thermodynamics and Thermal Process Engineering ITT at the University of Stuttgart and was a research associate and group leader at central services analytics at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, until he was appointed head of the division Process Analytical Technology at Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin, Germany. BAM is a senior scientific and technical Federal institute with responsibility to Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. In 2012 he got his habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) at Technical University Kaiserslautern, Germany, in Process Analytical Technology, where he focused on High-resolution Online NMR Spectroscopy for Reaction- and Process monitoring.
His research activities are in the field of quantitative online NMR spectroscopy, other analytical online methods, chemometrics, and sensor automation concepts. He works actively in different industrial, scientific, and standardization working groups such as of DIN and DKE, IEC and NAMUR as well as of GDCh and DECHEMA.
