What is an Actuary?

How much a Life Insurance Costs? Gracinda Rita Guerreiro and Lourdes Afonso

There are several mathematical techniques that allow us to model and quantify the risk of life/death in a given population. In this module, we will briefly learn how Life Contingencies insurances work, focusing on a specific product - Life Insurance.

We will put ourselves in the role of an actuary and define a price for this insurance. To do so, we will start by answering a fundamental question: Which risks are covered by this insurance? Within the scope of that answer, we will understand how an individual's lifespan is measured, what is a mortality table, the importance of the interest rate and how these concepts are combined into Life Insurance modelling.

However, after having the price defined and the insurance marketed, there are still risks that affect the Insurer during the term of the contract. We will address the most relevant risks.

Hello everyone! I'm Sara and I'm 23 years old. I have a degree in Mathematics by the University of Coimbra and I'm currently finishing my Master's thesis at FCT of Universidade NOVA, in Lisbon. My love for Mathematics dictated my academic path, but don’t fool yourself if you think it was always a passion. Anyways, I consider myself a curious and dedicated person who enjoys traveling and a good debate of ideas!
