Coding and Mathematical language: an educational perspective in STEM scenarios

Invited Speakers:

Maria Alessandra Mariotti

Maria Alessandra Mariotti graduated in Mathematics at the University of Pisa - Italy, she obtained her PhD in Mathematics Education  at the University of Tel Aviv – Israel, under the direction of Efraim Fischbein. After few years spent as teacher at the secondary school, she became professor at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Pisa, where she taught for many years Mathematics and Mathematics Education, until  in 2005 she moved to Siena University where, currently she is Senior Professor and teaches Mathematics Education. She has been the principal investigator of several National and International research projects and coordinator and developer of a research group involving secondary school teachers. Director and co-director of several PhD thesis. She has been member of the scientific board of International Associations (PME- CERME- EMU) and National Associations(ARDM- France), she has been President of the Italian Association of Research in Mathematics Education(AIRDM).  Chair and co-Chair of international Conferences- she is now member of the Program Committee of ICME 14. The main fields of study have been “Integration of New Technologies in School Practice”  and “Argumentation and Proof”; in particular, she investigates the role of specific computational environments that enhance teaching and learning of proof.

Anna Baccaglini-Frank

Anna Baccaglini-Frank is an associate professor at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Pisa, Italy, where she teaches graduate students of mathematics and preservice primary school teachers. After graduating in mathematics, she followed her passion for mathematics education and began to work at the Education Development Center (Newton, MA, USA). For years, she continued to study how digital environments can be used to design inclusive activities that promote mathematical learning at all school levels, focussing especially on the production of mathematical conjectures. Among other activities, she serves on the editorial board of Educational Studies in Mathematics and is an associate editor of Digital Experiences in Mathematics Education  she is a member of the steering committee of the Italian Association of Research in Mathematics Education (AIRDM), she leads a Thematic Working Group at CERME, and she coordinates research-to-action activities of a group of in-service teachers in Pisa.
