Preparing prospective teachers for an integrated approach to STEM education

Ana Henriques

        

Ana Henriques has a PhD in Mathematics Education by the University of Lisbon, is Assistant Professor at Institute of Education, University of Lisbon, Portugal (IEUL), and a member of the Education Research and Development Unit (UIDEF) in this institute. She has experience in initial and in-service teacher education and has been participated in several research projects in mathematics teachers’ education and didactics of mathematics. Her research focuses has been on mathematical reasoning, the teaching and learning of mathematics, particularly in statistics and with technology, the knowledge and professional development of teachers, and more recently in STEAM education, being author of published bibliography in Portugal and internationally. ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7844-2157

Hélia Oliveira

Helia Oliveira is Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education at the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon (IE-ULisboa) and has large experience in initial and in-service teacher education. She is the general coordinator of the masters’ courses in initial teacher education, at the University of Lisbon.  She has been involved in several research projects, in Portugal, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology – FCT, namely in the area of mathematics, statistics and STEM education and teacher education and development, and also digital technologies in education. She has been visiting researcher and professor in a three-year long project funded by the Brazilian CNPQ for developing multimedia resources for initial and in-service mathematics teacher education and to study the impact of the use of those materials in (prospective) teachers’ knowledge and practice, concerning inquiry-based learning in mathematics. She has also been involved in several funded Europeans projects such as the two Eramus+ Program: Project EDUCATE – “Enhancing Differentiated Instruction and Cognitive Activation in Mathematics Lessons by Supporting Teachers Learning”, and the Project HIGH-FLIERS - Highly Interactive Guidance Helpful For Leadership In Educationally Relevant Skills. She is editor in chief of the Journal Quadrante – in the area of mathematics education, and co-editor of Sisyphus – Journal of Education.
