Promoting an integrated approach of STEM education through teachers’ professional development

António Manuel Domingos

António Manuel Domingos is PhD in Education Sciences, in Mathematics Education. Coordinator of UIED - Education and Development Research Unit, where he is Researcher Responsible for several research projects funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology. Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Education and the master's degree in Education, both of FCT-NOVA Lisboa. Coordinated several projects financed by Foundation for Science and Technology related with teaching and learning mathematics, technological resources for teaching and learning mathematics, success in mathematics and innovation and curriculum development. In addition, coordinates projects of implementation and monitoring of curriculum development and the use of teaching platforms, at all levels of education (e.g., Khan Academy; (“Mochila Leve”). He also teaches some curricular units at the Escola Superior de Educação João de Deus. He is co-author of several articles published in national and international journals related to STEM. He has supervised several master's and doctoral dissertations, some of which are related to STEM. The main research interests concern issues related to the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics, an integration of Technologies in Teaching and Learning, Curricular Development in Mathematics and aspects related to the History of the Teaching of Mathematics. The search for new ways of integrating knowledge through the promotion of interdisciplinarity has been a topic of growing interest, looking at STEM as a way to integrate and disseminate different knowledge.

Maria Cristina Costa

Maria Cristina Costa, graduated in Mathematics from Universidade de Coimbra, Master Degree in Mathematics from Universidade de Lisboa, PhD course in Mathematics from ISEG of Universidade de Lisboa; and PhD in Education Sciences, specialization in Mathematics Education, from FCT of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Researcher from the Smart Cities Research Center at the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar (IPT), and CICS.NOVA Research Center at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Participates in several national and international projects founded by Foundation for Science and Technology and Direção Geral do Ensino Superior and H2020 EU. She publishes several papers related to STEAM and augmented reality in international journals and book chapters, and presents her research at national and international conferences. Adjunct Professor at Instituto Politécnico de Tomar (IPT) since 2001, Head of the Mathematics Department from 2002 to 2010, and Head of the of the educational project Academy of Science, Art and Heritage (www.academiacap.ipt.pt) since 2013. She coordinates intervention projects related to STEAM in collaboration with local entities such as intermunicipal communities (Funded by Centro 2020) and Teacher Training Centres (Funded by POCH - Programa Operacional do Portugal 2020).
