Nélia Amado

Nélia Amado is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Algarve, Portugal, and is member of the Research Unit of the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon, were she collaborate in the supervision of doctoral students. She also collaborates in the supervision of master and doctoral students in mathematics education at the Universidade do Vale do Taquari-UNIVATES, Brazil. Over the years she has been involved in the initial and continuing education of mathematics teachers where she has devoted particular attention to the training of future and in-service teachers on the integration of digital technologies in mathematics teaching. She has served as member of the Advisory Committee appointed by the Portuguese Ministry of Education for the implementation of the national Plan of Mathematics and the renovation of the mathematics curriculum of basic education. More recently she has been assigned the position of external expert of schools that require priority intervention in the improvement of mathematics learning outcomes. Her research and the supervision of master and doctoral students cover the areas of teacher education, the integration of technology in mathematics teaching, the assessment of learning, the affective realm of problem solving, and mathematical competitions. She co-coordinates a continuing education program for mathematics teachers in the 3rd cycle of basic education in Azores-Portugal. She has participated in national and international research projects, including the Problem@Web project, and bilateral projects with Brazil. She has been involved in the organizing and scientific committees of international conferences, particularly the 10th International Conference on Technology in Mathematics Teaching and the Problem@Web International Conference. She has published articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals and is a co-editor of a special issue of the journal Teaching Mathematics and its Applications. Susana Carreira 

Susana Carreira is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Algarve, where she teaches mathematics and mathematics education to graduate and post-graduate students, and a member of the Research Unit of the Institute of Education, University of Lisbon, where she collaborates in the supervision of master and doctoral students in mathematics education. Her research activity has been on technologies in mathematics teaching and learning, mathematical modelling and applications, problem solving, mathematical creativity and affect in mathematics education. She co-coordinates a continuing education program for mathematics teachers in the 3rd cycle of basic education in Azores-Portugal. She has participated in several national funded research projects and was the principal investigator of the Problem@Web Project (2011–2014). Internationally she has developed projects in partnership with Brazil, where she also co-supervises master and doctoral students in mathematics education. She has been actively involved in several national and international conferences, including the International Conference on Technology in Mathematics Teaching (ICTMT), the International Conference on Teaching Modelling and Applications (ICTMA) and the Congress of European Research in Mathematics Education (CERME). She has published research articles in mathematics education, national and international, indexed journals; and authored and edited books, particularly related to mathematical modelling, problem-solving, digital technologies in mathematics learning and affect in mathematics education.
