Morning Tours (8 November)

In the morning, participants are allowed to choose only one among the following available tours:

Each morning tour will start at 10:00 am.

Each participant is responsible for ensuring their arrival at the tour location ten minutes prior to the start of the visit.

Registration is mandatory until 15th October.

1) Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga | Museum of Ancient Art (max. 30 participants)

"Created in 1884, and housed in the Palácio Alvor for almost 130 years, the MNAA-Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga has had its current title for more than a century. It is the home to the most important Portuguese public collection of art, ranging from paintings to sculpture, and gold and silverware, as well as decorative arts from Europe, Africa and the Far East."

2) Museu Nacional do Azulejo | Nacional Tile Museum  (max. 20 participants)

"The National Tile Museum was established in 1965 and became a National Museum in 1980. It is located in the former Convent of Madre Deus, founded by Queen D. Leonor in 1509."

"The museum collection features decorative ceramic tiles or azulejos from the second half of the 15th century to the present-day. Besides tiles, it includes ceramics, porcelain and faience from the 17th to the 21th century. Its permanent exhibition starts with a display of the materials and techniques used for manufacturing tiles."

3) Calouste Gulbenkian Museum: Founder's Collection (max. 25 participants)

"The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was created in 1956 by the last will and testament of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, a philanthropist of Armenian origin who lived in Lisbon between 1942 and the year of his death, 1955." (...) "The Foundation has a museum, which houses Calouste Gulbenkian’s private collection, and a Modern Art Center (CAM) which holds the most important collection of modern and contemporary Portuguese art; an orchestra and a choir; an art library and archive; a scientific research institute; and a garden, in a central area of the city of Lisbon, where educational activities also take place."

The tour will follow the usual route through the museum with focus “moments” on the Roman and Mamluk glass, Islamic and Chinese ceramics, and ending with fellow curator Luisa Sampaio in the Lalique Gallery.

4) Palácio Nacional da Ajuda | Ajuda Nacional Palace (max. 30 participants)

"The National Palace of Ajuda, a former royal palace and a national monument, is a magnificent museum and the only palace that can be visited in Lisbon. It faithfully preserves its original 19th-century arrangement and decorations of the rooms, namely in the monarchs' private quarters and throne hall. Strategically placed on the top of the hill of Ajuda, and enjoying an exceptional view over the River Tagus, the Palace houses important collections of 18th- and 19th- century decorative arts: gold and silverware, jewellery, textiles, furniture, glassware and ceramics, as well as collections of paintings, engravings, sculpture and photography."

Afternoon Tour (8 November)

The afternoon tour is being held at FCT-NOVA, Departament of Conservation and Restoration (DCR) & VICARTE Research Unit (Glass and Ceramics for the Arts):

This tour has no limit on inscriptions, everyone will be welcome to participate. However, registration is mandatory until 15th October.

The afternoon tour will start at 3:00 pm.

Each participant is responsible for ensuring their arrival at the tour location ten minutes prior to the start of the visit.

FCT-NOVA is located in the South of Lisbon, in a region now called Lisbon South Bay.
To get to the Conference location, you will probably need to travel to Lisbon, the Portuguese Capital City, and then travel a bit further to Almada, and FCT-NOVA in Campus da Caparica.

 

Getting to Almada and Monte da Caparica

Transport to FCT-NOVA

The Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT NOVA), Campus of Caparica is one of the most prestigious Portuguese engineering and science public schools and it is engaged in extensive research activity developed in 16 research centres involving 1600 PhD and Master’s students of the total enrolment of 7800.

The campus is served by a wide transport network, including combined services (bus, train, ferry) and by tram, which terminus ("University") is located along one of the FCT entrances.

From Lisbon (Airport)

Using public transportation:

There is a special shuttle bus (Carris nr 91), that takes passengers to Lisbon downtown in 20 minutes. This bus also stops at “Cais do Sodré” Train Station, next to the Ferry Station, where you can take a ferryboat to “Cacilhas”.
Once in “Cacilhas” you can take a tram to “Universidade”, hopping off on its terminus (located near one of the campus entrances).
In Cacilhas you can also take one of the following TST buses: “Marisol”, “Fonte da Telha” or “Costa de Caparica – via Almada”. They all stop next to the FCT main entrance.
(In the airport there are other town bus lines: 5, 22, 44, 45 and 83 to Lisbon).

Another easy way to get south is to take the Metro from Airport station (Aeroporto) towards São Sebastião, change for the blue line towards Amadora Este, and exit in Jardim Zoológico (which gives you access to the Sete Rios Train Station).
Take the Fertagus Train to "Pragal" and take the tram (MTS) towards Universidade, hopping off on its terminus (located near one of the campus entrances).

By Taxi
There are always plenty of taxis at the Arrivals and Departures Halls. All the taxis have meters, a ride to FCT NOVA costs approximately €30, depending on the traffic. During weekends, nights, and holidays there is a 20% surcharge.

From Lisbon Santa Apolónia Train Station

Using public transportation
Metro to “Amadora Este” (blue line), get out in “Jardim Zoológico” station. Take the Fertagus train to “Coina” or “Setúbal” and get out in “Pragal”. Once there, take the tram to “Universidade”, hopping off on its terminus (located near one of the campus entrances).

By Taxi
There are always plenty of taxis outside the station. All the taxis have meters, a ride to FCT NOVA costs approximately €25, depending on the traffic. During weekends, nights, and holidays there is a 20% surcharge.

From Lisbon Oriente Train Station

Using public transportation
Take the Metro red line from Oriente towards São Sebastião, change for the blue line towards Amadora Este, and exit in Jardim Zoológico (which gives you access to the Sete Rios Train Station).
Take the Fertagus Train to "Pragal" and take the tram (MTS) towards Universidade, hopping off on its terminus (located near one of the campus entrances).

From Almada & Caparica

Using public transportation
If you are staying in Almada, which is the closest place to reach the Conference Venue, you can take a tram to get to FCT-NOVA. From Cacilhas, or any other stop along the tram line (see all stops at http://www.mts.pt/rede.php) you can take a tram to “Universidade”, hopping off on its terminus (located near one of the campus entrances).
In Cacilhas, or around Almada region, you can also take one of the following TST buses: “126 Marisol”, “127 Fonte da Telha” or “124 Costa de Caparica – via Almada”. They all stop next to the FCT main entrance.

If you are staying in Costa da Caparica, take a TST bus to “Cacilhas – via Almada” and get out in the bus stop right in front of FCT main entrance.
