Welcome

The Department of Mathematics of NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA), with the support of the Center of Mathematics and Applications (CMA NOVA), will host the 2nd edition of the Winter School Mathmasters, from 13th to 17th January of 2020.

Mathmasters School is intended for undergraduate students, interested in Mathematics, considering the possibility of pursuing studies in this scientific area.

Given the topics covered by the school, students must at least be enrolled in the 3rd year of an undergraduate or master course in Sciences, Engineering or Economy of any Higher Education Institution.

Students will have the opportunity to contact with advanced themes of several distinct areas of Mathematics that could be study in more depth in on of the MSc offered by FCT NOVA.

The school offers six courses, each comprising three sessions of 1hour. In this 2nd edition the courses are the following:

  1. Purely Mathematics
  2. Current Issues in Actuarial Science
  3. Statistics: Discovery with Data
  4. One day with Operations Research
  5. Mathematics in Financial Markets
  6. Analytics and Big Data Engineering

Crash courses in R and Python will also be part of the offer of the Mathmasters School.

Mathmasters 2020 will host the debate The Challenges of Mathematics in the Digital Era, on January 17, 3:30 pm, in what will be a face-to-face meeting moderated by Paula Amaral (DM FCT NOVA), with the invited speakers Ana Luísa Custódio (DM FCT NOVA), Fabio Chalub (President of DM, FCT NOVA), José Cruz (Head of the Analytics Consulting Data Lab at BNP Paribas, Lisbon) and Ludwig Krippahl (DI FCT NOVA).

Does Mathematics play an important role in the Digital Era Transformation? What is that role? Are Computer Sciences enough to face the growing challenges in Data Analytics? What is the future for Pure Mathematics in this context? What are the new challenges? Is Machine Learning just glorified Statistics? What are the implications that these new contexts bring to Mathematics teaching?

These are some of the issues that you may expect to be enrolled in this debate. All the participants are welcome to intervene.
