The restaurant is inside of the Palmela Castle. The castle is situated between the Tejo and Sado rivers, and was the target of a great many military architectural modifications because of its significant geo-strategic value.
Archaeological studies have confirmed it was occupied by Moors between the 8th and 12th centuries. The castle was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques (first King of Portugal) and permanently recovered by D. Sancho I. It was the Headquarters of the Order of Santiago until its abolition, in 1834. The emblem of the Order is a cross in form of a sword, and today is incorporated into Palmela’s coat of arms. Today, it is a National Monument.
