Lectures (morning 8th May)

Opening ceremony by the President of SPEB, Prof. Dr. Mário Forjaz Secca

Where what the Portuguese Society of Biomedical Engineering consists in will be exposed as well as what Biomedical Engineering is and some of its projects.

Theme: "Cell2B - Celular Therapies", Dr. Pedro Andrade

Where the path taken by Cell2B since its idea until the business will be illustrated, focusing on each stage's challenges. The presentation will address several subjects which lead to the creation of the company, including its current plans for the present/future, as well as emphasize the research projects that took place at IST and resulted in Cell2B.

Theme: "Imaging with Radiopharmaceuticals - functional molecular specificity for disease detection and follow-up", Prof. Dr. Durval Campos Costa

Theme: “Tissue Engineering at FCT/UNL”, Prof. Dr. Jorge Carvalho Silva

Tissue Engineering is a multidisciplinary emerging area of Biomedical Engineering. In it, knowledge from natural and exact sciences and engineering methods are used to develop biological substitutes for damaged organs and tissues, by disease or accident, in which it is necessary to replace its form or function. The medium/long range objective is that Regenerative Medicine may have at its disposal biological substitutes to apply on patients instead of the prosthesis and grafts used nowadays. Some of GREAT’s projects will be presented in this lecture.

Theme: “Hypo-fractionated Image-Guided Radiotherapy”, Prof. Dr. Carlo Greco

Theme: “Hybrid electro-optical microfluidic device for single cell analysis”, Dr. Abel González Oliva

Where a hybrid sensor that is being developed will be presented as well as previous work with biosensors and nanoparticles (quantum dots) will be mentioned.

Theme: “Biomedical Engineering and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation”, Dr. Alexandre Camões Barbosa

The lecture will be generalist about the importance of Biomedical Engineering in the development of Physiatry, in the perspective of today’s main problems: the necessity to establish evidence in the electro physical agents (LASER, ultrasound, magneto therapy, radial shock waves, short waves, electric currents, etc.) and in the necessity to develop easier to use on a daily basis therapeutic and deficiency evaluation instruments.

Tema: "Imaging with Radiopharmaceuticals - functional molecular specificity for disease detection and follow-up", Prof. Dr. Durval Campos Costa

Tema: “Tissue Engineering at FCT/UNL”, Prof. Dr. Jorge Carvalho Silva

Alguns dos projectos do GREAT serão apresentados nesta palestra.

Tema: “Hypo-fractionated Image-Guided Radiotherapy”, Prof. Dr. Carlo Greco

Tema: “Hybrid electro-optical microfluidic device for single cell analysis”, Dr. Abel González Oliva

Tema: “Biomedical Engineering and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation”, Dr. Alexandre Camões Barbosa
