Professor Hugo Águas has a BSc in Materials Engineering (1996), an MSc in Materials Engineering –Semiconductors (2000) and a PhD in Materials Engineering - Microelectronics and Optoelectronics (2005), all of which were obtained the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa where he is now an Assistant Professor and Full Member of CENIMAT. His main scientific interests are: Thin Film Technology Processes, Plasma Processing Materials, Semiconductor Materials, Sensors, Condensed Matter Physics and Thin Film Coatings.

Engineer Rik Akse works at the University of Twente since 1980 in the faculty of Science & Technology. After a period of 8 years as a research assistant in Chemical Engineering he has worked on several positions as a coordinator on the border of Education and Research. Besides, he was secretary of the Dutch Research School on Process Technology and coordinator of the Process Development School of the University of Twente.

Dr. João Lobo Antunes graduated in Medicine from the University of Lisbon in 1968, obtaining his PhD there as well in 1983. Between 1971 and 1984 he worked at the New York Neurological Institute’s Neurosurgery Department, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, being named Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at that university. He returned to Portugal in 1984 as Professor of Neurosurgery of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon.

José Barata received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the New University of Lisbon in 2004. He has participated in many international and national projects from different programs. In particular he has been actively involved in the ASSEMBLY-NET, IP EUPASS, and strep IN-LIFE, all projects that cover the area of distributed intelligent manufacturing systems composed of intelligent and autonomous components. Currently he is involved in three STREP projects related to the multi-agent thematic: COSMOS, Self-Learning, and IDEAS.

Dr. Megan Carey received her BA and MA in Neuroscience from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, USA. For her doctoral thesis she studied the sensorimotor transformation for smooth pursuit eye movements in the laboratory of Stephen G. Lisberger, PhD, at the University of California, San Francisco, USA. Before starting her own laboratory at the Champalimaud in 2010, she trained as a postdoctoral fellow with Wade Regehr in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, Boston MA, USA.

Pedro  Ferreira

Pedro Ferreira has a BSc in Biomedical Engineering Sciences from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon. At the moment he is studying at the University of Twente as an Erasmus student during his first year of the MSc in Biomedical Engineering. His experience started in July of 2012 and will finish in July of 2013, with the realization of a project in the field of medical microrobotics.

Professor José Manuel Fonseca received his MSc and PhD from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. On his doctoral thesis he developed Distributed Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques applied to resource management. Later he specialized on intelligent image processing with special emphasis on image segmentation and object recognition. His work has been essentially on planetary image processing and biomedical image processing with special emphasis on the processing of retinal images and segmentation and tracking of microscopic cell images.

Manuela E. Gomes graduated in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, University of Porto in 1997, obtained the MSc in Polymer Engineering, Univ. of Minho under the supervison of Professor Rui L. Reis in cooperation with the company Isotis, Bilthoven (Holland), under the co-supervision of Prof Clemens Blitterswijk and Joost de Bruijn in 2001 and the PhD in Materials Science and Engineering – Tissue Engineering/Hybrid Materials in collaboration with the Rice University (USA), under the co-supervision of Prof A. Mikos in 2005.

Professor Rui Igreja was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1966. He graduated in Physics Engineering from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) in 1992 and joined the Physics Department of the same University in 1993. He obtained the MSc degree in Instrumentation, Industrial Maintenance and Quality in UNL in 1998 and the PhD in Materials Engineering (microelectronics and optoelectronics) (2006) in UNL.

Adam Kampff studied astrophysics at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.  He stayed there for his PhD in neuroscience, during which he designed and built two-photon laser scanning microscopes and investigated neural circuits that control visual behavior. After graduating in 2009 and receiving a postdoctoral fellowship from Harvard's Mind, Brain and Behavior program, Adam began studying how the mammalian brain controls and learns motor behaviors. In 2011, Adam moved to Lisbon, Portugal to start his own laboratory at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown.

Dr. Nuno Craveiro Lopes is the Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Service of the Hospital Garcia de Orta, Almada since 1991. In 1987 he obtained a post-graduate degree in Child Orthopedics at the University Hospital of Saint Justine, Montreal, Canada, and later in 1994 finished the course in Hospital Management. He has done experimental and clinical research in various areas such as Ilizarov’s methodology and Legg-Calvé-Perthes’s disease.

André Damas Mora has a PhD in Electrical Engineering, specialty on Medical Image Processing, by the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, since 2010 and a Master of Science in Computer Science, since 2002. He is working as a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa since 1999, where he teaches in the courses Sensorial Systems, Advanced Digital Image Processing Techniques and Medical Information Systems.

Nowadays Professor Abel González Oliva is the project leader of the Biomolecular Diagnostic Laboratory and Researcher at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica / Universidade Nova de Lisboa (ITQB/UNL). He graduated from Universidad de Buenos Aires / Argentina in Agronomy, later he took a Master’s degree and PhD in Agricultural Science at Universität Hohenheim /Stuttgart/ Germany.

She has a BSc in Economics from the University of Porto (1997), an MSc (1999) and a PhD (2003) in Operational Research from the London School of Economics and Political Science (PhD thesis "Achieving Geographic Equity in the Portuguese Hospital Financing System").
