Abstract:
The role of IUPAC in the conception and implementation of IYPT will be described as well as an overview of the exciting events that have been held already and will continue throughout 2019. The importance of the Periodic Table in the advancement of knowledge and technological applications will be illustrated with relevant examples, taking into account sustainability and the crucial importance of the chemical elements for industry, humankind and our planet.

He is Vice-President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and a member of the Management Committee of the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT) and of IUPAC Centenary celebrations, both taking place in 2019. He is also a core member of the IUPAC Interdivisional Committee on Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development. He was President of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) from 2007-8 and is President of the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Portuguese Chemical Society 2018-20. He is a professor of chemistry in the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and a director of the Electroanalysis and Corrosion Laboratory, Instituto Pedro Nunes, Coimbra. His research interests have focused mainly on the development of new materials in electrochemistry and their application in different areas, particularly in sensing.
