Tom Michoel

Tom Michoel is Professor in Bioinformatics at the Department of Informatics and Deputy Director of the Computational Biology Unit at the University of Bergen. His research focuses on causal inference and scientific machine learning with applications in cardiovascular and neuropsychiatric disease research. He has over 20 years of research experience spanning the fields of bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, mathematics, and theoretical physics, working closely together with researchers from the health and medical sciences in interdisciplinary projects. Prior to moving to the University of Bergen (2018-), he held group leader positions at the University of Edinburgh (at the Roslin Institute, 2012-2018) and the University of Freiburg (at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, 2010-2012). He was a postdoctoral scientist at VIB (in the Bioinformatics & Systems Biology division, 2004-2010), KU Leuven (at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, 2002-2004) and UC Davis (at the Department of Mathematics, 2001-2002). He received his PhD in mathematical physics from KU Leuven in 2001.
