Travel to and within Lisbon
Lisbon is easy to get to. It is a short flight away from most European cities, and is just as easily accessible by road, railway or sea.

Lisbon International Airport, 7 km from the city centre, has daily flights to and from the major cities in Europe and the world. The Portuguese airline TAP-Air Portugal, as well as major international airlines, fly to and from Lisbon.

By Plane

Lisboa International Airport, only 7 km from the city centre, has daily flights to and from all major cities in Europe and around the world.

By Car

The A1 Auto-Estrada do Norte extends from Porto (north) to Lisboa. The A8 links Lisboa to the northwest. The A9, Lisboa’s outer ring-road connects the A1, A8 and the A5, which links Lisboa to the Estoril Coast (25 kms west of Lisboa).

The A2 Auto-Estrada do Sul, and the A12 links the Algarve (south) to Lisboa.

Driving times to Lisboa:

From Porto (North of Portugal) – 3 hours

From Faro – Algarve (South of Portugal) – 3 hours

From Madrid – 6 hours

All motor vehicles drive on the right. Unless otherwise indicated, vehicles approaching from the right have priority at junctions. Seatbelts are obligatory. The law is strict regarding drinking and driving. The maximum speed in towns is 50 km p/h, and 90 and 120 km p/h on main roads and highways respectively. Petrol stations are open from 07:00 am to 08:00 pm, and on highways, service stations are open 24 hours a day.

By Train

Scores of national and international trains arrive in Lisboa’s stations every day. In addition to the terminal station "Santa Apolónia", the city has built the new station "Gare do Oriente", which opened in 1998 and is adjacent to the "Parque das Nações" (former Expo site). Both stations have convenient and direct bus or underground connections to the city centre. The "Sud Express connects Madrid-Lisboa daily as well as Paris-Lisboa (through Madrid). By Boat

The Port of Lisboa is the busiest port on the European Atlantic coast, and is often used as port of call for many cruise ships (coming from different places). There are three cruise ships terminals:

  • Alcântara
  • Rocha de Conde d’Óbidos
  • Santa Apolónia

To access the city centre, from the airport, several options are available:

Aerobus

Makes the run between Lisbon Airport and the city centre.Service begins at 7:45 h and ends at 20:15 h. Buses pass every 20 minutes.The ticket may be purchased from the driver, as you board the bus.

Taxis

There are two taxi stands within the perimeter of the airport, one at arrivals and another at departures. You can get more info and purchase a Taxi Voucher at the Tourism Information Counter in the airport's Arrivals Hall.
 
Passport and Visa

A valid passport is required for entry into Portugal. A visa may be required for some countries. For information about visa and passports contact your local Portuguese Embassy at least 3 months prior to your departure to join us in Lisbon. Letters of invitation required to meet the administrative and legal regulations for participants from certain countries are available upon written request.
