HTS Modelling Workshop

The Modelling School will be preceded by the 6th International Workshop on Numerical Modelling of High Temperature Superconductors, on 26-29 June 2018, also in Caparica.

This is a forum envisaging producing advances in the methods and tools required for boosting the development of superconducting technologies, by fostering discussion and networking among practitioners in the demanding field of HTS numerical modelling.

This event belongs to a series of international workshops which was initiated in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2010, followed by Cambridge (UK, 2011), Barcelona (Spain, 2012), Bratislava (Slovakia, 2014) and Bologna (Italy, 2016).

The workshops have been held under the auspices of the HTS Modelling Workgroup.

The main topics of the International Workshop include, among other:

  • Innovative methods and tools for design and simulation of HTS devices and materials.
  • Design and optimisation of HTS devices for power applications (energy storage - including SMES and flywheels, fault current limiters, power cables, transformers, wind turbines, HTS bulk and stacked tape machines, and induction heating).
  • Computation of AC losses under distinct regimes (e.g. harmonically polluted currents and fields).
  • Improvements in numerical methods.
  • Development of tools for integration with power grid software simulators.
  • Open access HTS modelling and simulation resources for teaching, training and researching.

A roundtable for discussing the opportunity of "HTS based energy storage for grid applications" will be organised in the Workshop, in collaboration with the Joint Programme on Energy Storage from EERA (European Energy Research Alliance).

High-quality contributions to the Workshop will be invited to publish in a Focus Issue of Superconductor Science and Technology (SUST) “Numerical Modelling of High Temperature Superconductors 2018”.

Reduced fees will be provided for participants of both the Workshop and the School, as well as an enriching, cultural program connecting both events (open for all wishing to participate).
