A Brief History
The Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) was established the Minister of Education, Professor Veiga Simão. The first Dean of the UNL, Professor Fraústo da Silva, presided the AET, which began to design the organisational structure of the institution for a maximum of eight thousand students, to be installed in 1985 in the area of Quinta da Torre in Monte de Caparica. In September 1974 it was completed the study of the five scientific areas to develop: natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, arts, applied science and technology, medical sciences and para-medical.
Throughout the evolution of the FCT-NOVA until nowadays, some of the branches of the initial degrees individualised in their own courses, such as Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. Traditional degrees were created in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering, which was to be changed to Electrical and Computer Engineering. The scientific and pedagogical innovation continued in some areas, as exemplifying the degree in Biomedical Engineering and Conservation-Restoration, both interacting with other UNL colleges. And the number of masters degrees increased, some degrees were converted to the first courses of postgraduate specialisation, as well as there were created other new profiles, such as Computer or Cell and Molecular Biology.
Thus, different areas of scientific and technological knowledge have been developed, and these have given valuable contributions to national modernisation and boosted a creditable international recognition in the current process of globalisation.
